Why Decluttering Feels So Hard And What To Do About It

Have you ever stood in the middle of a cluttered room and thought, “I don’t even know where to begin.” Or worse, “Why can’t I just sort this out like everyone else?”

If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something: You’re not the only one and, more importantly, there’s nothing wrong with you.

Decluttering can feel incredibly hard. Not because you’re lazy. Not because you’re unorganised. But because life is full and your home reflects that.

The Real Reason Decluttering Feels Overwhelming

Most people think the hardest part of decluttering is knowing what to throw away, but in my experience, the hardest part is everything behind the clutter. Every object holds a story. A decision you’ve been avoiding. A reminder of a life you thought you’d live. A version of yourself you feel guilty for outgrowing, and when you’re tired, overwhelmed, or stretched too thin, it’s no wonder the thought of clearing a cupboard can bring you to tears.

You’re Not Behind, You’re Just Carrying a Lot

Life today doesn’t give you much breathing space. Between work, family, relationships, and everything else on you are juggling, your home often becomes the last thing you have time or energy for. Over time, clutter builds up, not because you’re messy, but because you’re in survival mode, and this is what I believe; You don’t need more discipline, you don’t need to be more “on top of it.” You need support.

The Decluttering Myth That Keeps You Stuck

So many people I work with say the same thing: “I feel like I should be able to do this on my own.” But who said you have to? We’ve been taught to treat decluttering like a solo project, something you do in silence, behind closed doors, with the pressure of before-and-after photos looming in your mind. But that’s not how it works in real life. Decluttering is emotional. It’s layered, and it’s okay to ask for help.

What to Do When You Don’t Know Where to Start

If you’re staring at a space in your home and feeling stuck, try this:

  1. Pick one drawer or one corner and only focus on that.

  2. Set a 10-minute timer and do what you can.

  3. Make simple choices: keep, donate, or let go.

Don’t chase perfection, just look for progress.

Ask yourself: What do I want more of in this space?

Small steps count. You don't need to do everything today you just need to start.
